The Nikon D60

Nikon D60

It’s possible to get into high-quality digital SLR photography without paying a small fortune. It’s called the Nikon D60. With 10.2 megapixels, dust reduction technology and built-in photo editing features, the D60 is a feature-filled DSLR in a convenient size. The ability to use both AF-S and AF-I autofocus lenses and f-mount manual Nikkor lenses is a big plus also.

The Nikon D60 inherits Nikon’s long history of quality film and digital cameras. The D60 takes advantage of many accessories and features that it shares with the pro-level cameras. One example is its integration with the many good strobes that Nikon produces. It is able to use the SB-R200, the SB-400, SB-600, the SB-800 and the R1C1 close-up speedlight.

Similar to the less-expensive D40, the D60 offers features closer to the D40X. The D60’s Active D-Lighting helps avoid blown out areas in photos and produces a more natural color rendition and better contrast. It offers a very fast start-up time, eliminating the possibility of losing that fleeting image. It also supports Nikon’s VR (vibration reduction) series of lenses.

The D60 is aimed at the novice DSLR photographer, but it shares several features with the pro-level cameras that Nikon produces. An Airflow Control System moves airflow through the mirror box to dislodge dust from sensor. The EXPEED image processing concept creates smooth tones and accurate color for vibrant pictures and flattering portraits.

A glimpse at the LCD screen provides access to the camera’s Retouch Menu allowing for in-camera photo editing. Intensify colors, eliminate red-eye, crop or add a star filter effect; the Retouch Menu is like having your desktop inside your camera.

Nikon has packaged the D60 in kit form with the AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR lens, providing a wide angle to normal range for day to day photography.

So what are its shortcomings? Noise above ISO 800, but you’re not paying for a D2. Low light focusing ability, although that is not uncommon in cameras at this price point. The Adaptive Dynamic Range feature can slow the process of writing to the memory card. Another frequently heard complaint; only three active focus points. Compared to some of the higher-end Nikon cameras, this seems inadequate. There is no live view; but even the D200 lacks that feature.

The D60’s 10.2 megapixel sensor will produce images that can be printed at 11 x 14 all day long. Want to go with a larger print; no problem. This is a good camera for the consumer who wants to choose from a wide array of quality lenses, use a camera with an uncluttered design and take advantage of high-end strobes.
